Susan Haack, in memoriam
It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the passing of Prof. Susan Haack (University of Miami) on March 10, 2026. Among her many achievements and contributions to the international philosophical community, the editorial team of Principia would like to remember her encouragement for the formation of a community of philosophers of science and analytical philosophers at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. In 1997, in vol. 1, no. 2 of Principia, Susan Haack published the article “O quebra-cabeça do ‘método científico’”, a Portuguese translation of “The Puzzle of ‘Scientific Method’”, published in parallel in Revue Internationale de Philosophie, vol. 51 (1997), pp. 495–505. Two years later, in 1999, Susan was one of the guests at the 1st Principia International Symposium, publishing that year, in vol. 3, no. 2 of Principia, the article “Defending Science - Within Reason”, advancing the argument of her book of the same title that would be published a few years later. In 2001, Susan published the article “Clues to the Puzzle of Scientific Evidence” in Principia vol. 5 no. 1-2, advancing another chapter of her Defending Science. On her last academic visit to Florianópolis, Susan gave the opening keynote address at the 4th Principia International Symposium in 2005. Based on that presentation, she published the article “The unity truth and the plurality of truths” in Principia vol. 9, no. 1-2. Given these works and countless contributions to the people who built the Principia journal and symposia, as well as UFSC's NEL (the Epistemology and Logic Group) and also UFSC Graduate Program in Philosophy itself, the influence of Susan Haack's thinking on the philosophy we do in Florianópolis is unquestionable. At this time of grief over the loss of an important thinker and member of our community, we would like to remember this influence so that her legacy may live on.
