The sexual division of labour in the countryside from a young peasant perspective

Abstract

Based on young peasant narratives, this article analyses the sexual division of labour in rural areas, focusing on tensions produced by generational differences. Data obtained from four stages of pedagogical workshops (2015-2016), using the life history methodology with 150 young people from two schools based in agrarian reform settlements in Paraná, show the impacts of gendered labour on the process of peasant youth socialization. The study provides evidence of generational conflicts in a shifting context, as well as the pedagogical and cultural impact stemming from access to systematic knowledge and debates on the theme, especially, the revision of prejudices and the shift of discourses, practices and attitudes towards gender equality, notably, through the agency of young peasant women.

Sônia Fátima Schwendler, Universidade Federal do Paraná

Possui graduação em Pedagogia (1992) e Mestrado em Extensão Rural pela Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (1995). PhD em Estudos Ibéricos e Latino Americanos pela University of London, Queen Mary College (2013). Professora Associada II da Universidade Federal do Paraná, no Setor de Educação (desde 1997) e Pesquisadora Honorária da Universidade de Londres, Queen Mary College. Atuou como Membro do Programa Nacional de Educação na Reforma Agrária (Pronera) do Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária - INCRA (1998-2000) e na Secretaria de Estado da Educação do Paraná como Coordenadora da Educação do Campo (2003-2004). Coordenou o Curso de Pós Graduação Latu Sensu em Educação do Campo (2005 a maio/2008). Professora e pesquisadora da Universidade Federal do Paraná, com atuação no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação. Vice-líder do Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero da UFPR e Membro da Articulação Paranaense por uma Educação do Campo. É co-autora do livro Paulo Freire: vida e obra (2001) e co-autora e organizadora dos livros Exercitando a cidadania no campo: a educação popular com trabalhadores Sem-Terra (2006), Educação do Campo em movimento: Teoria e prática cotidiana, v.I (2010);Conflitos Agrários: seus sujeitos, seus direitos (2015);  Teorias e Políticas de Gênero na Contemporaneidade (2017).  Tem experiência na área de Sociologia e Educação, com ênfase em Movimentos Sociais e Educação do Campo, Estudos Comparados na América Latina, e Estudos de Gênero.
