This article begins with a brief history, which refers to the inaugural scene of Western culture. This epic begins with Plato's project of maintaining the unity of the Hellenic polis by subjecting the individual to the collective. Unlike other cultures of the time, the ancient Greeks sought the causes of physical phenomena not in the deities but in the very events of nature. However, the "illusions of the senses" would weaken our confidence in cognition based on individual experience. This conception underlies the epistemology proposed centuries later by Kant. According to him, only thought independent of all sensible experience, that is, pure reason, could familiarize us with "external reality", rescuing the necessary confidence in the cognitive process. According to Maffesoli, the end of modernity points to signs that show the advent of an abstract rationalism, which is no longer based on representation, but on sensible reason. The question then becomes: is sensitive knowledge possible.
