This study examines ergonomics and psychological aspects of the introduction of ORS (Optical Reading System) on the activities of the service sector, actually the main sector where new information technologies are introduced into the working process. The focus of the analysis were the changes felt in the working situation by supermarket cashiers after the introduction of ORS at the checkouts. Two supermarkets were observed from March to September/98. While one shop still was operating with the traditional system (manual register), the other one already had introduced ORS. The results indicate the need of a change in the training policies for thistype of work and also specific changes in the working environment and activities.
