Resumo

Ainda que não esteja estrei-tamente vinculado ao tema da tradução, este artigo apresenta insights sobre o uso de meios de significação por Joyce que se relacionam aos sistemas de sig-nificação representados pela cidade multilíngue e multicultural de Trieste, onde Joyce viveu por uma década e meia. Apresenta, pois, um panorama da importância e da contribuição que a ci-dade austro-húngara de Trieste teve pa-ra a identidade artística de Joyce, que lá chegou em 1904 como um intelectu-al dublinense de vinte anos de idade e que de lá partiu em 1920 um maduro homem de família. A Trieste cosmopo-lita e sua população multilíngue prove-ram a Joyce um rico pano de fundo cul-tural que estimulou sua imaginação e contribuiu para a criação da tapeçaria linguística do Ulysses e do Finnegans Wake.

ABSTRACT

This essay, while not strict-ly connected to translation, offers in-sights into Joyce’s use of mediums of signification that cross over to the sig-nifying systems represented by the multilingual and multicultural city of Trieste where Joyce lived for a decade and a half. It offers an overview of the importance and contribution that the Austro-Hungarian city of Trieste had to the artistic identity of Joyce who ar-rived there in 1904 as a twenty-year-old Dublin intellectual and left in 1920 as a mature family man. Cosmopolitan Trieste and its multilingual population presented Joyce with a rich cultural background that stimulated his imagi-nation and contributed to the language tapestry of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake.
