From classical Portuguese to Brazilian Portuguese: inheritance, roots, drift and contact

Based on two syntactically annotated corpora covering the period from the 16th to the 19th century, this article argues that the contact with other languages, particularly African ones, did not precipitate the “Lusitanian and Romance drift” of Portuguese in Brazil, as stated by Silva Neto (1977 [1950]) and Naro and Scherre (2007). On the contrary, the study of the evolution of the use of determiners in the history of European Portuguese, and its comparison with other Romance languages, shows that the drift of these languages was towards a generalization of the presence of articles, in the opposite direction to the trend observed in Brazilian Portuguese to maintain variation in use and to expand the contexts of absence of determiners. This calls into question the role attributed to contact, by the mentioned authors, as supporting the drift, at the same time that it reintegrates into the study of the evolution of Portuguese in Brazil the description of the language that was imported without discontinuing for 3 centuries.
