This study describes and analyzes the graphic recording of vowel nasality in word medial position by children speaking three varieties of Portuguese, namely, Brazilian, European and Mozambican. Bearing in mind the theoretical divergences in relation to the existence of nasal vowels in the Portuguese phonological inventory, we seek to investigate, in writing acquisition data, how children who share the same linguistic system conceive vowel nasality. It should be noted that, according to Miranda (2018), the graphic record of medial nasality is a complex task that is imposed on children in their early school years. In this paper, we analyze data extracted from 1st and 2nd grade texts of public schools in the cities of Pelotas (Brazil), Porto (Portugal) and Maputo (Mozambique), belonging to the Written Language Acquisition Database (BATALE). The results found corroborate the literature in the area of phonological acquisition that defends the existence of nasal vowels in the children’s inventory, a knowledge that supports early alphabetic writing and that, due to the effect of the contact with the orthographic form, is gradually altered until it corresponds to the proposal by Camara Jr (1979) for the vowel nasality of the adult Portuguese system, that is, an oral vowel followed by a nasal consonant.
