Abstract

Italo Calvino’s romance – If on a winter’s night a traveler – is a combination of narratives that are connected in a detective novel structure. The main characters – the Readers – need to solve the puzzle of unfinished novels and stolen manuscripts. Ermes Marana, the translator character, is in the very core of the plot and his character works not only as a narrative tool used to increase the level of mistrust for the reader, but also as a way of questioning the position that authors and translators occupy inside literary universe. Italo Calvino uses the translator character to ironize the notion of the ideal writer and to rethink the clichés that have to do with translator’s profession.
