Science Fiction and the Novum (1977)

Based on the Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch, in this essay, the Yugoslavian critic Darko Suvin postulates the novum as a prevailing category of science fiction, in relation to other narrative genres as Fantasy, mythology, fairy tales and naturalist fiction. Novum is a principle which transforms the narrative universe, comparably to the empiric norm of the author. In addition, that consists of a historical event, due to the fact that novelty is not recognized as such at all times (consequently, neither a science fiction narrative belongs indefinitely to this genre). Thus, combined to analogy, novum replaces concepts previously formulated by Suvin as extrapolation, which now he regards as unacceptable, since it is based on a notion of future as a limited time. On the other hand, novum changes the own connection between time and spatial relations and is established in relation to its own relevance. Revealing his affinity with Marxist thought, the author assumes that such narrative genre is drawn on a collaboration between human and natural sciences, for only the first could properly address transformation in historical processes and social relations undertaken by novum.
