Abstract

Taking the Kantian expression "the letter and the spirit of the law" included in the Critique of Practical Reason as a core reference we defend a conception of moral motivation in Kant. According to this conception, the moral rules (the moral law) motivate us because we derive reasons for acting from them. The presentation is divided into three steps: (i) in the first part we draw a historical and conceptual reconstruction of the problem of motivation in Kant’s philosophy, so as its respective changes throughout the pré-critical and critical period; (ii) after that we outline the main argument in the Second Critique; (iii) finally we explore the role of the moral consciousness for moral motivation. In the final part, we close with a brief conclusion.
