Vulnerability as key concept to virtuous design: exploring the path to an ethics of technology

The paper aims “vulnerability” as a central category to set up any technological ethics, in other words, an ethics concerned with a technological society where the design of tech artifacts is modulated by a moral matrix in which the virtues play a significant role by ruling the technological creation. It means to stay away from the anthropology strongly focused on autonomy and freedom of human agency, and from an understanding of nature as instrumental, both constitutive of the modern way of understanding technology and its role in human life; as well as to take away from an understanding of design as instrumentalized and morally neutral. To do this, I appeal to authors like Alasdair MacIntyre, Hans Jonas, Bruno Latour, Peter-Paul Verbeek, Mark Coeckelbergh, and Sébastien Proulx, to draw on some theoretical contents required to set the concept of “virtuous design” that recognizes vulnerability as a constitutive part of an ethics of technology.
