The objective of this article is to present the results of the extension project Chess at UNIFAL-MG: the game as a sporting and leisure possibility. Developed throughout the 2023 academic year, the project had the regular participation of 20 members, including students from public and private schools, as well as university students and faculty. Activities were held twice a week in the evening, with each meeting lasting two hours, covering beginner and intermediate concepts of the game, historical aspects, and practical chess sessions. The results indicate the relevance of chess in the context of university extension as a space for dialogue among people with different backgrounds, the production of original materials, and the exchange of knowledge. Furthermore, the project contributed to the academic development of the extension participants, teachers in initial and continuing education, and promoted participation in local and regional tournaments, with medal achievements. There was also knowledge sharing with individuals outside the project and engagement in chess practice in both in-person and online settings. It is concluded that the chess project had a positive impact on the university and its community, fostering mutual learning, valuing chess as both sport and leisure, expanding social interactions, and strengthening teacher education. Additionally, it encouraged reflections on the use of games in higher education, occupying a space still underexplored in academic life and offering access to chess for beginner and intermediate players.
