This article investigates evidence of meaningful learning about the Nature of Science during the implementation of a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit, structured around historical inquiry-based approaches within the context of Thermodynamics instruction. The study was conducted with 16 seventh-grade students from a public school in Uruguaiana, Brazil. Data collection involved participant observation recorded in a field diary, as well as two open-ended questionnaires administered as pre-test and post-test, which were analyzed using Discursive Textual Analysis. The results indicate that the historical inquiry-based approach contributed to the assimilation, elaboration, and differentiation of subsumers related to the Nature of Science, as evidenced by more sophisticated understandings of the tentative nature of scientific knowledge, the processes of scientific communication and validation, and the collective and sociocultural character of science. However, the persistence of some simplified views was observed, particularly regarding experimentation and the development of scientific theories. Thus, although the historical inquiry-based approach proved potentially meaningful, further research is needed to deepen the understanding of its contributions and limitations.
