Abstract

This study investigates the knowledge presented in Quantum Mechanics textbooks used in higher education, focusing on the definition of the wave function. The theoretical and methodological framework is based on Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), specifically the semantic dimension and the concept of semantic density, which enables the analysis of different levels of complexity and condensation of meanings within texts. The study presents a translation device composed of five levels of semantic density and applies it to the analysis of six sections extracted from three widely used Quantum Mechanics textbooks: The Feynman Lectures on Physics (Feynman, Leighton, & Sands), Quantum Physics (Eisberg & Resnick), and Introduction to Quantum Mechanics (Griffiths). The analysis encompassed both sections dedicated to the conceptual interpretation of the wave function and sections focused on the presentation of the Schrödinger equation. The results also reveal significant differences in the organization of knowledge across the textbooks. Feynman, Leighton, and Sands emphasize quantum concepts and employ narrative and conceptual explanations; Eisberg and Resnick introduce the wave function primarily through references to classical physics; and Griffiths combines conceptual and mathematical approaches, placing strong emphasis on mathematical formalism and problem solving. The analysis of semantic profiles showed that texts characterized by semantic waves promote articulation across different levels of semantic density, varying the complexity of meanings and thereby enhancing knowledge building. In contrast, sections characterized by extended passages at high levels of semantic density, particularly at the symbolic level, tend to hinder access to meanings and conceptual understanding. The findings indicate that the semantic organization of textbook discourse directly influences learning opportunities, highlighting the importance of instructional materials that promote movement across different levels of semantic density.
