No act without scene, no scene without theater: A contribution of the materialism of the imaginary to the relationship between discourse and history

There are two purposes to this article. On the one hand, to introduce, regarding some open debates on discourse theory, theoretical elements of the problematic field that we call materialism of the imaginary. Secondly, showing the way in which, within this perspective, the category of phantasm, coming from psychoanalysis, allows us to move towards a materialist elaboration of the real as an overdetermined singular conjunction and the effectiveness of its inscription in the processes (plexuses) that exceed it. This double question is usually indicated through the concept of performativity. Finally, I propose that the task of a materialism of the imaginary towards a theory of discourse is also to develop a notion of performativity in accordance with its central axioms. Along this path, the still inaccurate category of phantasm also shows much potential.
