Attempts to silence Non-Binary Language with prohibitive Legislative Projects in Brazil: the (un)speakable Socio-Educational Path

Abstract

This article opens a window for discussion, so it does not attempt to answer the position taken by the Brazilian legislature in knocking out non-binary language in Brazil. We present a contextualised view from the field of linguistics with a socio-educational perspective. One might imagine that this is a confrontation or a polemic. However, we have articulated the positions of language in the notions of Fairclough (2001, 2003), Butler (2009, 2015, 2021) and Foucault (2005, 2008, 2012) to establish a path of Educational Avatar in the progress of conservative positions. This inclusive issue is far from solving the problems of dissident sexualities, but it certainly contributes to the transformation of thoughts and connects to the respectful and less violent forms that society desires. In terms of the research findings, we can say that the bills analysed predominantly prevent non-binary language, arguing that it harms the teaching of Brazilian Portuguese and threatens the use of our language. In practice, resistance to advances in language is intrinsically linked to the way in which categories and norms are established in society, which implies that these bills prohibiting non-binary language are much more an expression of conservative groups opposing the incorporation of inclusive guidelines than they are an attachment to the cultured norm of the Portuguese language.
