Abstract

Based on Kastovsky (2009) and Gonçalves (2011a, b), for whom the distinction between the two main word formation processes – compounding and derivation – is not discrete, we present, in this paper, an analysis for mania, particle from Ancient Greek, in order to check the morphological status of formations as 'Luan-mania' ("immoderate passion for the singer Luan Santana") and 'Mengo-mania' ("obsession to the Flamengo, a soccer team"). We intend to check the position in the morphological continuum, suggested by these authors, such formative stands. Based in Gonçalves and Andrade (2012), who propose several empirical criteria to differentiate radicals and affixes, we observe the aspects by which -mania behaves as radical and the aspects by which -mania behaves as suffix.
