Based on the theoretical assumptions of the cognitive theories of Terminology, this work aimed to analyze the incidence of denominative variation in the understanding of the specialized concept of Lexicography. In order to achieve this goal, we conducted an experimental research with Brazilian university students of Letras course. We applied a test of reading comprehension from Lexicography texts that presented specialized concepts based on variation. The results showed that variation influences cognitively in the process of textual comprehension and, consequently, has an impact on how the reader understands and constructs the concept.
