Generic subject pronouns and indefinite pronouns in oral interactions: cases of generic or indeterminate reference

This research aims to investigate how the indefinite pronouns and the pronouns nós, você and a gente, when used with generic or indeterminate reference, can be configured as resources for face-work in oral interactions. The corpus of analysis consists of a portion of data from the surveys generated by the Project Language beliefs and attitudes: a study on the relationship between Portuguese and contact languages (AGUILERA, 2009), in Capanema, Paraná. The theoretical basis is composed of research on generic subject pronouns and subject indeterminacy (BORGES, 2004; OROZCO, 2019), indefinite pronouns (CASTILHO, 2010; NEVES, 2018) and studies on face-work (BROWN; LEVINSON, 1987; KERBRAT-ORECCHIONI, 2006; GOFFMAN, 2011). The results showed that the indeterminacy resulting from the use of indefinite pronouns and generic or indeterminate subject pronouns can be an efficient strategy to guarantee the positive face-work, mitigate negative content, avoid responsibility for what is said and avoid criticism.
