The sociolinguistic history of Brazil is permeated with contacts, conflicts, ruptures, impositions and prevalences. If, on the one hand, the Portuguese and the Portuguese language arrived in Brazil, on the other hand numerous ethnic-linguistic groups also came from the African continent, brought especially through the slave trade - which, in itself, already sets the tone for relations between the Portuguese language and the languages coming from Africa. Our text focuses on the period from the 16th to the 19th century and the dynamics of the relationship between the Portuguese language and the African languages, discussing the process of linguicide that the African languages went through.
