Brief analysis of the black sign in the story maria, By Conceição Evaristo in the light of Saussurian semiology

Language, as a component of language, is an integral part of the human social structure. As a result, language creates and reproduces traces of inequality based on its historical formation and on the power relations to which it is subjected. In Brazil, the Portuguese language has words and expressions that contain what we call racist semantics, such as the black sign. It is therefore intended to promote a brief analysis of the black sign using the short story Maria, by Conceição Evaristo, based on studies produced by Ferdinand de Saussure (2006) about semiology, in addition to other concepts developed by Gabriel Nascimento (2019), Frantz Fanon (2020), João Teixeira Carvalho Netto (1983), among others, in order to demonstrate how the sign, despite its formation, can change its meaning, positioning Semiotics as a tool to combat structural racism.
