Abstract

The article discusses how the sociology of language – in its relation to macro and micro sociolinguistics – has been organized as a field of knowledge, which includes its delimitation, themes, theoretical-methodological orientation and objects. We explore the historical trajectory of the constitution of the field of sociology of language in its relationship with sociolinguistics, paying attention to the way in which this constitution influenced and was also influenced by the definition of the sociolinguistic field itself. To this end, two elements are analysed: i) the emergence and consolidation of the field of sociology of language in dialogue with the notion of macrosociolinguistics, based on the works of Joshua Fishman; and ii) the relation between microsociolinguistics and sociology of language, based on the studies of William Labov. This article intends to dialogue with the diagnosis made by Fishman (1991) about a mid-life crisis in sociolinguistics, by focusing on the social dimension underlining both axes, the macro and micro ones.
