In 2021 the Companhia das Letras Publishing republished the first of many books of black writer Carolina Maria de Jesus’ masterpieces. The first one was Casa de Alvenaria, edited by acknowledged black writer Conceição Evaristo and Carolina Maria de Jesus’ daughter , Vera Eunice, which was supported by many female black scholars. In responding this news, the literary critic Regina Dalcastagne, who is white, publicly opposed what she termed “inappropriate” in the Portuguese language printed in the book. In this letter, delivered at the inaugural act of Conceição Evaristo as the Olavo Setubal Endowed Professor at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo, I contrast many of these arguments concerning with “improper Portuguese by theorizing in contact with previous discussions I have developed. As a conclusion, I argue to be existing a war on two linguistic practices, the Portuguese language of Carolina Maria de Jesus and the Portuguese language of Regina Dalcastagne.
