Coloniality of power and linguistic prejudice

The aim of this article is to revisit the book Preconceito Linguístico: o que é, como se faz, by Marcos Bagno (2007) in light of decoloniality, in order to observe how the myths that structure linguistic prejudice continue to function for maintaining a set of beliefs that contribute for legitimizing the hierarchical structure of social relations in Brazil. To this end, we take as theoretical references Quijano (1999 [2000], 2005), Maldonado-Torres (2007), Garcés (2007) and Costa-Bernardino and Grosfoguel (2016). The book is over 20 years old, is in its 56th edition and continues to be an invitation to demystify the colonial concept of language: a homogeneous, immutable and universal institution. Given the role played by the work, we establish a comparison between the discourse that structures it and decolonial practices. We consider that the involvement of different social actors is important for the recognition of Brazilian linguistic diversity and, consequently, for a decolonial linguistic education.
