For a rhetorical-functional understanding of the modality category in argumentative function

Abstract

The aim of this article is to propose a dialogue between the postulates of two theoretical-methodological perspectives: the New Rhetoric, from the perspective of studies done by Perelman e Olbrechts-Tyteca ([1958], 1996) and the Linguistics of functional base from the perspective of studies done by Hengeveld & Mackenzie (2008), which point to the understanding of the modality category in the argumentative function. We support that this dialogue makes possible the understanding of the ways modal linguistic expressions act in the construction of the argumentative speech, which in rhetorical terms is characterized as a piece of linguistic construct that has as the starting point the audience´s agreement regarding the premise in which the one who makes his/her argument bases and conducts his/her speech on conclusions authorized by justification – argumentative techniques.

Léia Cruz Menezes, Bolsista do Programa Nacional de Pós-Doutorado (PNPD/CAPES) no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística da Universidade Federal do Ceará

Possui graduação em Letras Português pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (2002), Mestrado em Linguística (2006) e Doutorado em Linguística (2011) pela mesma instituição. Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase na pesquisa linguística de orientação funcionalista, atuando, principalmente, nos seguintes temas: modalidades e construção da argumentação. No âmbito da docência, como Professora Substituta do Departamento de Letras Vernáculas da UFC, de abril de 2006 a maio de 2007, ministrou as disciplinas: Linguística Morfologia, Língua Portuguesa I e Teoria e Prática de Ensino de Língua Portuguesa. Novamente como Professora Substituta do Departamento de Letras Vernáculas da UFC, de fevereiro a novembro de 2011, ministrou as disciplinas: Língua Portuguesa: Frase, Língua Portugesa: Vocábulo, Linguística: Funcionalismo e Fundamentos Linguísticos para o Ensino da Alfabetização. Como tutora em educação a distância, de 2008 a 2011, ministrou as disciplinas: Língua Portuguesa:Vocábulo, História da Língua Portuguesa, Linguística:Formalismo e Semântica, pelo Programa Universidade Aberta do Brasil -UAB/UFC. No âmbito da pesquisa, como orientadora de trabalhos de Especialização, vem trabalhando com a categoria Modalidade e com Formação de Professores em Atendimento Educacional Especializado. Atualmente, realiza pesquisa vinculada ao projeto do grupo Protexto (UFC), na condição de bolsista de Pós-Doutorado (PNPD 2011/CAPES).
