The motivation for proposing research by Linguistic researchers: a Socio-Rhetorical analysis

The purpose of this research is to analyze the relationship that steps of rhetoric — ‘reporting previous research’, ‘stating research gap’ and ‘stating real world problems’ — hold with the proposing of projects written by expert researchers in Linguistics. The research is inscribed in the Socio-rhetorical and is based on Swales (1990, 2004), Berkenkotter e Huckin (1995), Connor e Mauranen (1995), Motta-Roth e Hendges (2010), Lim (2012, 2014) e Alves Filho (2018). The sample is composed of 12 Linguistic research projects. The steps were quantified and characterized in their rhetorical and lexical aspects, as well as the relationship that these strategies had with each other and with the proposition of the research. The results indicate that previous research and research gaps are little used as an argument for a new research and, in contrast, the search for real world problem solving is assumed as the main motivating element.
