Verba dicendi in the news: points of an argumentative continuum in the construction of intertextuality

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate how verba dicendi, responsible for introducing the discourse of others, contribute to construct an argumentative line in news. A comparative analysis of two news considering an interpretative-qualitative paradigm is proposed. The analysis is based on two news that report the same event, published in two media vehicles. This study considers argumentation is inherent to language. Based on this theoretical interpretation, we observed the verba dicendi are used in an argumentative continuum, on a scale that goes from the least marked verb to the most marked in terms of argumentativity. They represent strategies that direct the interpretation of the reader on the reported facts or even on the media vehicle itself.
