Intension and extension in description of soccer scenarios

The discussion about intension and extension originates in classical postulates about philosophy of language and has important role in the history of lexicography. Despite the presence of this topic in studies about definition, little has been established about how to use intensional or extensional technique when writing a definition. This paper presents some reflections on these two kinds of meaning description that emerged during Field review. Field is a frame-based dictionary of soccer terms compiled for the 2014 World Cup and later reviewed for the 2018 World Cup. In the present discussion, we explore some peculiarities of intensional and extensional definitions and their relation to semantic theories - with special attention to the link between extensional definitions and cognitive semantics. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the association between intensional and extensional definitions can be useful in the writing of glosses in electronic dictionaries.
