This research aimed to identify which concerns and difficulties faced by stricto sensu postgraduate students are related to their level of stress, as well as to assess possible correlations among level of stress, perceived academic performance and intention to drop out. For this, 348 students from 53 academic and professional master's and academic doctorate courses at the Federal University of Uberlândia were investigated. Through a quantitative study, with application of multiple linear regression tests and correlation tests, important results were found. It was identified that the higher the stress level, the lower the academic performance perceived by students tends to be; and the greater the stress level of the students, the greater the intentions to drop out of the course tend to be. Furthermore, the difficulties and concerns that most strongly explain the students' stress level are: lack of motivation; internal pressure for good performance; interference from the demand of studies about other aspects of student’s life; personal financial aspects; difficulty regarding the deadline for writing the thesis or dissertation; lack of incentive; and difficulty in reconciling studies with personal and family life. These findings suggest that attention to stress in stricto sensu graduate programs and the need for care for students at this level of education should be part of the of future professionals training.
