Under the aegis of knowledge management and institutional theory, this research sought to identify, analyze and understand the facilitating and limiting factors of the self-evaluation process in a federal educational institute, in order to then propose improvement actions. Methodologically, this research was characterized as qualitative, of the case study type. Data were collected through interviews with managers of the institution, participant observation and through documentary research. The analysis followed the procedures of content analysis and the triangulation technique. The results show that the strategy and support from top management; people management policies and practices; the organizational culture and environment; the structure and roles; the processes and technologies; the individual factors and the measurement of results are pointed out as potential facilitators and/or limiting factors in the self-assessment process. Finally, it is concluded that the association of theoretical lenses of knowledge management and institutional theory provided an advance in the understanding of the self-evaluation process by highlighting its limitations and providing opportunities for improvements.
