This article is part of the project "Theoretical and technical contributions for a cultural critique of the news". As a follow-up to the research carried out in Spain, in 2016, this stage attempts to compare the degrees and procedures of criticism of journalistic coverage that appear in two academic journals: Estudos Sobre el Mensaje Periodístico (ESMP) of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia (EJM), published by Federal University of Santa Catarina, Florianópolis, Brazil. Based on this empirical object, circumscribed in five years of each publication, from 2011 to 2015, articles were selected that analyze the journalistic treatment in different coverages, with special attention to the following variables: news topics; type of media; years of the coverage; journalistic genres; methods of analysis adopted; perspectives or approaches; and degree of criticism. The general objective is to theorize about "how they criticize those who criticize" and to systematize some forms of appreciation of different media objects, particularly the news media. Among the conclusions, it is possible to say that the authors of the articles criticize journalistic coverage by the frameworks adopted in their public opinion formation, not working against prejudices, stereotypes, discrimination and inequality, but for the maintenance of the status quo; and also criticize the coverages for their omissions against hegemonic power.
