When new actors leave the scene. Continuity and changes in the focal point of social movements

Abstract

After provoking great expectations in the 1980s, social movements mysteriously disappeared from academic debate in the 1990s. In this paper we focus on some of the factors involved in this apparent disappearance, in particular the changes in the analytic lens used in the literature, which shifted focus onto other social actors and, in doing so, hid social movements from view. The movements, however, continued to demonstrate considerable vitality in the 90s. Based on unique empirical findings, produced by means of network analysis and based on a survey undertaken in the city of São Paulo in 2002 with 202 actors in civil society, this paper argues that social movements continue to be an important protagonist in the field of collective action; however, today they share the field with new protagonists which we call “coordinators”. These new actors were formed during the 1990s by other civil society actors. Key-words: social movements, networks, NGOs.

possui pós-doutorado pelo Institute of Development Studies - University of Sussex (2005), doutorado em Ciência Política - Universidade de São Paulo (2001), mestrado em Sociologia - Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1994), e graduação em Ciencia Política y Administración Pública - Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (1991). Atualmente é Professor Doutor do Departamento de Ciência Política da Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas da Universidade de São Paulo e pesquisador do Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento - CEBRAP (SP). Tem experiência na área de Sociologia Política e atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: associativismo, sociedade civil, teoria democrática, espaço público.

Graziela Luz Castello, Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento

Mestranda em Ciência Política pelo IFCH/ Unicamp, possui graduação em Ciências Sociais pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (2003). Tem experiência na área de Ciência Política, com ênfase em Atitude e Ideologias Políticas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: associativismo, sociedade civil, análise de redes, movimentos sociais e representação política.

Renata Mirandola Bichir, Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento

É graduada em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade de São Paulo (2002) e mestre em Ciência Política pela Universidade de São Paulo (2006). Desde 2007, é doutoranda em Ciência Política no Instituto Universitário de Pesquisa do Rio de Janeiro (IUPERJ). Desde 2001, é pesquisadora do Centro de Estudos da Metrópole (CEM-CEBRAP). Tem experiência na área de Ciência Política, com ênfase em Políticas Públicas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: políticas públicas, pobreza, segregação, políticas sociais, redes sociais e associativismo.
