This paper seeks to identify the role of the social movements at the present time, the conceptions of democracy that are at the base of their practices, how they consider themselves, and what horizons they project for the society. The movements are examined by focusing on the tendency of their discussion of new rationalities and epistemology used in dealing with the gender issue. The text analyzes the apparent invisibility of women in the popular social movements and the need for its correction, correlating their participation in the feminist theoretical production of the 1960s with the debates on questions of gender beginning in the 1980s. Keywords: social movements; gender; democracy.Downloads
