Politics and society: for a return to political sociology

Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to make some considerations on the limits and advantages of institutionalism’s rational choice in regard to the understanding of political phenomena. The text critically examines some of the representative studies that Brazilian political science has attached to this theoretical approach. This criticism develops around three themes: state, political elites and democracy. It suggests that a prudent return to the approach of political sociology would produce some analytical gains, without, of course, giving up the scientific achievements of the studies examined in this essay.
