Abstract

This paper is the transcription of a speech presented in April of 2003 by the political scientist Francisco de Oliveira, proffered in the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, about Brazil’s current political moment, when the new government was completing a hundred days. The electoral victory of Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, politics and economy’s enlace, the economic aspect of the Social Security reforms and the value of the votes nowadays are the main topics of his ideas. Oliveira insists on being a “pessimist” about political analysis and Brazil’s new ways. In order to do that, he went back to the moment of Proclamation of the Republic, analyzing moments of rupture, and society’s transformation until the time we are living in.
