Abstract

Contemporary political theory has been increasingly challenged by formulations grounded on republican ideas. Current theorists have claimed that the genesis of this tradition in political  thought can be found in the prevailing political and moral notions of the ancient roman Republic. My goal in this paper isto evaluate the first three books of The history of Rome, by Livy, and the first two books of On the Republic, by Cícero. and investigate the importance of monarchy in their arguments. Iargue that a precise understanding of the signifícance of the initial stage of the history of the city and this constitutional principie to the idea of Mixed Constitution can enrich insight into key elements of the republican tradition of política! thought.
