Article: Political Sociology, Political Science and "rational choice"

Abstract

This lecture seeks to specify the characteristic focus of a political science, as opposed to the idea of a Political Science and its pretension of autonomy and of the perspective of a "rational choice", as a singularly important effort of abstract and general theorization. It is claimed that, despite the fact that there is a conventional view that seeks to relate the political phenomena to the levei of the State, both the appropriate definition of politics and the explanation of political phenomena, as well as the substantive or theoretical problems with the implementation and operation of democracy, refer to the social context, thus making "political science" and "political sociology" synonyms.

Author Biography

Fabio Wanderley Reis, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

tem graduação em Sociologia e Política e Administração Pública pela Faculdade de Ciências Econômicas da UFMG (1959), pós-graduação em Sociologia pela FLACSO (Santiago do Chile, 1963), mestrado (1970) e doutorado (1974) em Ciência Política pela Harvard University. Atualmente é professor emérito da Faculdade de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas da UFMG e membro do Conselho Deliberativo do CNPq. Foi professor visitante, pesquisador associado ou conferencista de instituições do país e do exterior, sendo membro do conselho editorial de várias publicações de ciências sociais. Foi presidente da Anpocs, tem ampla atividade como publicista e longa atuação junto a órgãos de fomento científico e apoio à pesquisa. Tem experiência nas áreas de Sociologia e Ciência Política, trabalhando com temas ligados a desenvolvimento político, autoritarismo e transição; cidadania, estado e mercado; democracia, processo eleitoral brasileiro e questão social; cena mundial e globalização. Recebeu o prêmio de "melhor obra científica" por Política e Racionalidade e é Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico.
