Interactions between social movements and the state and their effects: a challenge for social movement theories

This article analyzes the interrelationship between social movements and the state in theories of social movements, based on a literature review of the last three decades. It seeks to demonstrate advances in studies by recognizing that the boundaries between the state and the movement, traditionally conceptualized as dichotomous and autonomous spheres, are tenuous and blurred. Concerning the thesis of mutual constitution, I argue that understanding the interactions between the state and the social movement becomes more complex if guided by a dynamic and relational approach to interrelationships as mutually constitutive and interdependent. I also argue that this analytical articulation between civil society and the state is fundamental for understanding the connections and overlaps between collective actors and political institutions and their outcomes in policies and actors. Furthermore, I argue that the analysis of these interactions must be complemented by a relational approach to the interaction between state and movement that, being mutually constitutive, cannot be merely contextualist.
