Homophobia and the Brazilian Socialists in “O Lampião da Esquina” (1978-1981)

Abstract

“The lamp of the Esquina” was the first gay newspaper with political engagement in
Brazil, becoming a reference in the debate on gender issues in the 1970s during the military
dictatorship, commonly called Brazilian left has engaged in the dispute that involved a range of
social and political issues. However, starting from the reports of “The Lantern”, the left’s shares at the time, referring to LGBT demands, may be questionable. Thus, this article aims to analyze the 47 newspaper editions searching for content that evidence of the tensions between the left and the LGBT movement in the period in which it was printed. Today most of the left acts in defense of sexual freedom and against gender oppression. However, through this analysis, it was observed that LGBT causes were the last to be understood as policy issues by the left of the time.

Rodrigo Otávio Moretti-Pires, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde Coletiva/UFSC

Sociólogo, pesquisador na área de Ciências Sociais em Saúde Coletiva, com enfoque em Diversidade Sexual e Gênero. Tem atuação importante como ativista LGBT, sendo atualmente conselheiro do Conselho Municipal de Direitos de pessoas LGBT de Florianópolis (2016-2018). É graduado
em Ciências Sociais (UFSC) e Odontologia (FORP-USP) e mestre em Saúde Pública (FMRP-USP) e Sociologia Política (UFSC) e doutor em Ciências (EERP/USP). Atualmente cursa um segundo Doutorado em Sociologia Política (UFSC). Tem Pós-Doutorado em pesquisa pela CICAD/ Organização dos Estados Americanos (por meio de programa da SENAD e EERP-USP). É editor-chefe do periódico Saúde & Transformação Social/Health & Social Chang (ISSN 2178-
7085). Desde 2009, é docente do quadro permanente do Departamento de Saúde Pública da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.

Pós-doutor pelo Centro de Estudos Sociais da Universidade de Coimbra, doutor em Saúde Coletiva e mestre em Saúde Pública pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). É professor no Departamento de Saúde Pública da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina e coordena o Núcleo de Estudos em Democracia, Associativismo e Saúde. Conduz orientações de Mestrado e Doutorado no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Saúde Coletiva da UFSC.
