Abstract

This article aims to discuss the concept of “secondary labor force” to characterize female workforce in Latin America. Such characterization corresponds increasingly less to reality, as women’s participation in the labor force and the hours dedicated to their paid work continues to grow, as well as their contribution to household income. The article argues that such characterization is one of the core elements of the gender discriminating patterns that persist in Latin American labor market.
