International trade and labor standards: the fallacy of humanitarian discourse

This article analyses the attempt of imposing labour standards through the international trade policy currently headed by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The article scrutinizes the origin and the evolution of the subject in the international arena, focusing on the human rights argument. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the contradictions and deficiencies of the humanitarian argument, which is commonly used by those who support a formal linkage between international trade and labour standards.Downloads
