Analyses of translations into LIBRAS as a guarantee of access to digital literature based on the compositional metafunction.

Abstract

This article proposes a reflection on the processes of translation into Libras as a form of cultural resistance and as a means to expand access to digital literary works, in addition to its importance for ensuring reading in a signed language. It is based on the understanding that translation into Libras transits between languages and modalities, reconstructing text-videos (Lemos, 2023) and requiring new reading practices. The analysis engages with Visual Design Grammar (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), with an emphasis on the compositional metafunction, and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer, 2009). From the perspective of transcreation (Campos, 2004) as a translation process, it is mobilized to discuss the creative and cultural aspects involved in adapting literary works to Libras, while the notion of modality (Rodrigues, 2018) underpins the analysis of the different linguistic and sensory materialities implicated in the process. The corpus of analysis includes the platform Libros with the translation of the book A Caçada (Karsten, 2020) and Nogueira’s (2023) reinvention of Machado de Assis’ short story A Cartomante. From a transcultural perspective, it investigates how these productions reconfigure literary narratives into text-videos that have undergone translation into Libras and constitute an integral part of a digital literature situated within a distinct Libras Literature. The results indicate that translation into Libras ensures the reading of texts within digital literature, given their nature as text-videos. Analyses based on Visual Design Grammar revealed how spatial organization, information values, salience, and framing of elements articulate the literary content and its mediation in Libras. From the modality perspective, the study demonstrates how creative, cultural, and sensory aspects are mobilized, consolidating Libras literature as digital literature and establishing it as a distinct and meaningful field.
