Several studies (Venuti, 1995; Robinson, 2002; Benedetti and Sobral, 2003) were and have been carried out about the role of the translator and also the difficulties faced by this professional to produce a quality translation. Contemporarily, the translator is seen as a meaning producer and not a mere transporter of words from a language into another. This professional must be committed to his/her lexical choices, which will have consequences for the determination of the constructed meanings in the context of the target language. This study aims at analyzing the role of the translator according to the articles published at Cadernos de Tradução, volumes I to VI, from 1996 to 2000, by UFSC. The articles which relate to the role of the translator in these six volumes were selected and from 175 articles, 62 discuss this subject. The three most recurrent themes were selected in the volumes, and they are presented here in a decreasing order: the interpretative act in the translation process, the adaptation of the lexical choices according to social-historical-cultural aspects and the contextual issues. There is an interrelation among the themes and after the data analysis, it was possible to notice a consensus among the analyzed themes in Cadernos de Tradução and the current literature in the area.Downloads
