CALL FOR PAPERS: Narrative Encounters in the Americas: Migration, Diasporas and Travel

Beyond the exotic and sensational perception of travelers, the narrative transit within the Americas can be associated with major political, historical and social contexts: the Good Neighbor Policy period, the military coup in the 60s and 70s, the migratory and diasporic movements in recent decades, as well as the ecological turn and its cultural interest in the Amazonian forest, to name a few.  These historical contexts constitute some of the narrative clusters within the Americas that have engendered ways of seeing the other in geopolitical terms.  

This dossier of Ilha do Desterro will focus on narratives that have circulated across the Americas—how such narratives get written—and how they help to create a geopolitical and cultural mapping of North American and Latin American countries. By examining what gets narrated and how certain narratives get circulated more frequently, as well as transposed, adapted, and imagined, one might have a better understanding of these inter-cultural encounters and their geopolitical effect, not only in relation to those who are being narrated, but also about those who narrate.

The present dossier of Ilha do Desterro invites original articles and reviews, in English and Portuguese, that approach these geographical and cultural crossings in the Americas, from various perspectives, including the standpoint of migration, diaspora or travel studies in an anglophone context or in a comparative perspective.  We are interested in work that focuses on literature, film, and other narrative art forms that approach such questions in connection to inter-American studies.
