<b>Revisiting current paradigms in computer assisted language learning research and development</b><br>

Resumo

Because Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is amultidisciplinary field, many researchers in the area believeit is necessary to develop a more homogenous and rigorousapproach to CALL research and development. This paperdiscusses the current state-of-the-art in in the field andproposes a more inclusive approach to design and implementCALL projects. The opinions and facts presented here are basedon the procedures used to develop the TAGARELA system.

Luiz A Amaral, University of Massachusetts Amherst

Luiz A. Amaral (http://people.umass.edu/amaral/) is an assistant professor of linguistics at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. His research focuses on theoretical models of second language acquisition, computer assisted language learning, and natural language processing of learner language. He is also interested in user models, and activity design in CALL. He is one of the developers of TAGARELA, an intelligent language tutoring system used in the instruction of Portuguese as a foreign language.
