Discursos conflitantes da autobiografia negra: respeitabilidade, autenticidade e masculinidade

Resumo

Após historicizar a política de representação racial em narrativas de escravos, este artigo reflete de que forma raça, gênero e classe se cruzam historicamente na produção autobiográfica de homens negros nos Estados Unidos. No início da era Jim Crow, a autobiografia negra se conformava com uma política cultural de sinédoque racial, a qual afirmava que o progresso racial dependia da respeitabilidade de indivíduos admirados. Dominada por figuras determinadas que se apresentavam como emblemas raciais, a autobiografia negra tornou-se intimamente alinhada com os imperativos da formação negra da classe média, motivando uma forma discreta de publicidade racial que ergueu limites disciplinares em torno da autoapresentação negra e silenciou figuras de má reputação. Com o surgimento da autorreferência sobre sexualidade e criminalidade, mesmo que sutil ou marcante, nas narrativas de homens negros, autobiógrafos como o boxeador Jack Johnson, o acadêmico J. Saunders Redding e o escritor Claude Brown romperam as restrições de classe que haviam determinado produções autobiográficas negras, encenando uma luta de classes interna sobre os termos da representação racial - isto é, entre discursos conflitantes de respeitabilidade racial e autenticidade racial.
