Abstract

Objective: To present an initial diagnosis of the contemporary use of the term information integrity associated with the digital information ecosystem, based on its conceptual trajectory, its terminological imprecision perceived in various fields of knowledge, and its recent definitions proposed by international multilateral organizations.

Method: This is a theoretical study based on bibliographical and documentary research, with a qualitative approach, focused on the hermeneutic exercise of analyzing the contemporary uses, contexts, and disputes surrounding the term information integrity. This study aims to understand the challenges of this term's emergence in the lexicon of governments and multilateral institutions in the 21st century and its repercussions in the Brazilian context. For the systematic literature review, we propose a theoretical dialogue with contributions from Information Science, considering its transdisciplinary dimension, Computer Science, and Administration, among others. From a critical perspective, we also adopt a documentary analysis of international reports and guidelines from multilateral organizations to challenge the hegemonic narratives that characterize the concept of information integrity.

Result: The study addresses the potential contribution of the theoretical framework that Information Science can offer to this debate through the lens of information mediation and the concept of the information regime.

Conclusions: It highlights the necessary combination of epistemic and political components to critically construct the concept of information integrity within contemporary democratic frameworks, requiring both institutional and scientific contributions. Thus, information integrity is revealed not only as a theoretical construct but also as a term politically anchored in specific contexts and increasingly contested within the scientific field.
