Abstract

This paper addresses the characteristics and functionality of mailing lists, aiming at filling a gap in the literature of library and information science in Portuguese and disseminating their use among information professionals. It presents the commands for three list management software (Listserv, Listproc and Majordomo), compares and contrasts mailing lists, Usenet groups and chats, lists some Netiquette rules and presents several examples of Brazilian and foreign mailing lists in the area of library and information science.
