Digital book architecture on google platform: an exploratory study

Abstract

This paper analyses the architecture of the digital book using indicators applied to the evaluation of the printed book and indicators applied to evaluate the performance of digital artifacts. Publishers of digital books seem interested in preserving the characteristics of the printed book in the electronic environment, adopting standards that attempt to “soften” the transition to digital media. The comparative analysis of Google Books platform was conducted using a synoptic table containing the features likely to compare between the digital and the printed book. The authors have concluded that the digital books on Google Books platform add little value to the characteristics of the printed book, subtracting from them, at the same time, some of their distinguishing features, such as portability.

Mestranda em Ciência da Informação pela Universidade Federal da Bahia. Bacharel em Biblioteconomia e Documentação pela Universidade Federal da Bahia (2009) e em Comunicação Social - Produção Editorial pela Faculdade Hélio Rocha (2006). Atua na área de Ciência da Informação realizando estudos sobre a arquitetura do livro eletrônico e sobre as tecnologias de acesso e uso da informação digital.

Nanci Elizabeth Oddone, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro

Nanci Oddone (Rio de Janeiro, 1953) é licenciada em Letras Vernáculas, bacharel em Biblioteconomia e Documentação, especialista em Produção Editorial, mestre e doutora em Ciência da Informação, com estágio de pós-doutoramento na área de Direito Autoral e Propriedade Intelectual. No ano acadêmico 2008-2009 foi professor visitante na Escola de Direito da Universidade de Kent, Canterbury, Reino Unido, onde realizou estudo interdisciplinar sobre o regime internacional de direito autoral e suas implicações econômicas, políticas e ideológicas. Na Universidade Federal da Bahia atua como docente permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciência da Informação. No âmbito do curso de Biblioteconomia ministra as disciplinas "História do Livro e das Bibliotecas" e "Editoração". Coordena o Grupo Infociência, desenvolvendo pesquisas sobre aspectos históricos, epistemológicos e políticos da informação científica e das tecnologias para acesso e uso da informação digital. Na área editorial desempenha atividades de edição e revisão de textos, tradução e normalização.
