The growth of the number of repositories of scientific journals and digital libraries of theses and dissertations in open access has been reported in several studies recently. The aim of this paper is to evaluate, with a specific focus in the field of Science Communication, how this phenomenon has happened and its impacts for this scientific community. We present the main results obtained in the construction of a federated digital library, the repository Univerciencia.org, which allowed us to assess how open access repositories in standard OAI-PMH have been widespread among the journals and postgraduate programs of the area, as well as usage patterns and modes of operation of repositories, providing evidence to enable us to assess how they have been built.Downloads
